About the tariff simulator
Flexport’s US Tariff & Import Duty Calculator is a free app that lets you see exactly what U.S. Customs will charge for any commodity—under every relevant scenario and parameter—in seconds. Type or paste your 10-digit HTS (HS) code, pick an origin country, and the tool instantly returns:
- The duty rate and any Section 301/232 surcharges—fully aligned with the latest Trump-era lists and subsequent modifications.
- A side-by-side rate comparison for alternative sourcing countries, so you can model “what-if” moves out of China or into Mexico/Vietnam.
- Flags for preferential trade programmes (USMCA, DR-CAFTA, KRFTA, etc.) that could take your duty to 0 %.
- A plain-English breakdown of how the charge is calculated, including ad-valorem, specific, and combination rates.
- Automatic adjustment for the entry date and date of loading, ensuring the duty rate shown is the one that will actually apply on the day your goods clear customs.
- Precise Section 232 calculations that factor in the declared percentage of steel or aluminium content for products subject to metal duties.
- Instant surfacing of special programme indicators (SPI)—e.g. codeP” for DR-CAFTA or “S” for USMCA—so you never miss an eligibility-driven reduction.
No signup, no paywall—just actionable numbers you can trust when negotiating FOB prices, calculating landed cost, or answering “What happens if Trump changes tariffs again?” for your CFO.
Tariff Simulator Philosophy
The tool is targeted towards trade compliance professionals who already have their HTS codes. Accordingly, the search bar is only based on the HTS language, not common language. For example, “computers” does not appear in the search since these are considered “Automated Data Processing Machines” of heading 8471 in the HTS language.
The data powering this tool is based on official announcements only. Anything that is on social media, stated at press conferences, or said in news media by the administration will not be incorporated into the tool. Only Federal Register Notices, Executive Orders, or CSMS based guidance will be incorporated into the calculator.
This tool is intended to automatically apply or remove special codes based on dates, exclusions, or other data inputs. As you change input data, special codes will appear and disappear based on the published rules from CBP.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate U.S. import duty with this tool?
Enter your 10-digit HTS code, choose the country of origin, adjust parameters such as entry date or steel/aluminium content if prompted, and click "Calculate". The tool fetches the current MFN duty plus any Section 301, Section 232, or safeguard surcharges and shows the total percentage and amount.
Is the calculator updated for the latest Trump-era Section 232 and IEEPA tariffs and exclusions?
We implement changes as soon as possible after they are published in the Federal Register. The calculator shows a last updated date for the data.
Do I need the full 10-digit HTS code, or will 6 digits work?
In the US duties are calculated for the 10-digit HTS codes. We need your 10 digit HTS code in order to complete the calculations. We do let you search for HTS codes using English descriptions.
Can I compare duty rates for China versus Vietnam (or any two countries)?
Absolutely. Run the first country, note the rate, switch the origin dropdown, and recalculate. The results panel keeps both values so you can see the delta instantly.
Does the tool account for free-trade agreements like USMCA?
Yes. If the commodity and origin qualify, the calculator shows a "Preferential Rate: 0 %" badge and surfaces the corresponding special program indicator (SPI), such as "S" for USMCA
Where does your tariff data come from?
Core rates are pulled from the U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTSUS). Surcharges are layered from USTR notices, preference programme tables come directly from CBP guidance. We carefully compile additional tariffs from multiple sources such as Federal Register notices, USTR notices and executive orders.
How often are the rates updated?
We update the data on a best-effort basis - typically within a day or two after a major tariff change is official. You can find the last updated date for the data in the calculator, after selecting an HTS code. The tool is able to review rates and effective dates back to January 1st, 2025.
Are anti-dumping (AD) or countervailing (CVD) duties included?
The calculator can flag for AD/CVD, but it cannot determine with certainty these duties based on the information provided. And remember, an HTS flag does not determine whether a good is subject to Anti-Dumping or Countervailing Duties. It is the language in the scope of the ADCVD orders which determine dumping applicability
Is this calculator really free?
100%. We built it as an open resource for the trade community. If you need deeper classification help or compliance consulting, you can reach out via the "Talk to an Expert" link.
Are there any limitations?
There are a few, which will be solved in future iterations. The current limitations are:
- If country of aluminum smelt is Russia on 232-flagged aluminum goods, there is 200% 232 duty rate, not 25% duty
- Watches, clocks, and GRI 1 sets/ensembles are not yet supported.
- These rates does not include any HMF, MPF, informal fees, IRS taxes, or any other miscellaneous fees collected at import.
- GSP is currently expired, and the SPI field does not support GSP claims (neither removing duty nor MPF).
- Not all Chapter 98 or 99 programs are s upported at this time
- FTZ toggles and data elements regarding privileged dates
